Had they any sense of history they would never
leave the land, never push their fragile crafts off
the shore, row, or set sail and head to beyond
the horizon, to the fishing banks, drop their nets,
bait their hooks, or ready their harpoons, trusting
to God and their own skills that the seas will not
swallow them, knowing that the longer they stay
out, the more frequently they go out, the more
likely that they will not escape the fury and the
deceit of the seas, still they go out denying
the history that they know, challenging fate,
trusting in their skills, knowing that God's will
is beyond human comprehension.
